What is Urinary Tract Infection and what causes it?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that occurs in any part of the urinary system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.
UTIs are caused by bacteria, most commonly Escherichia coli (E. coli), that enter the urinary tract through the urethra and multiply in the bladder. Factors that can increase the risk of developing a UTI includes-
- Female anatomy
- Sexual activity
- Sexual activity
- Blockages in the urinary track
- Weakened immune system
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) can happen in men too, although they are more common in women. When UTIs occur in men, they often involve the urethra and bladder but can also involve the kidneys or prostate gland.
UTIs in men can be caused by many of the same factors that contribute to UTIs in women, such as a urinary tract obstruction, sexual activity, or a weakened immune system. Additionally, certain conditions that affect the prostate gland, such as prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), can increase the risk of developing a UTI.
Symptoms of a UTI in men may include pain or burning during urination, frequent urination, a persistent urge to urinate, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, or pain in the lower abdomen or back.
For Females, it’s over 6 mg/dL
For Males, it’s over 7 mg/dL
High levels could be a sign of many conditions, including gout, kidney disease, etc.
Gout: This is a form of arthritis where crystals from uric acid form in your joints and cause intense pain. You often feel it in your big toe, but can get it in your ankles, feet, hands, knees, and wrists, as well. It can also cause swelling, redness, and discomfort in those joints, and may limit your range of motion.
Kidney stones: These are little, hard masses -- like small stones -- that form in your kidneys when you have too much uric acid. They may cause severe pain in your lower back that comes and goes, blood in your urine, throwing up, upset stomach, and an urgent need to pee.
